Cyberpunk 2077’s Keanu will play Johnny Silverhand, a street poet with a message for the government. Read about his origins here.
In the many, many months leading up to the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the hype train seems to be gathering more speed every day. With cinematic trailers and even a whopping 40-minute gameplay trailer, it seemed that fans couldn’t wet their pants any more than they have already.
Until CD Projekt Red dropped a bomb on us last week.
This “breathtaking” live appearance from the man himself took things to a whole new level, raising expectations for the game and blazing a trail of memes along the way.
The man, myth and legend Keanu Reeves is to play a major role in Cyberpunk 2077, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Keanu is owning 2019, with John Wick 3 breaking many box office milestones, solidifying our love for the humble celebrity who still takes the subway.
But who is this Cyberpunk 2077 Keanu and what role will he play?
In Cyberpunk 2020 – the role paying game, there are classes much like in Dungeons & Dragons. Silverhand is of a very distinct class known as a Rockerboy, which can only be described as the equivalent of a DnD Bard mixed with an Iconoclast.
According to text from the original Cyberpunk 2020 game, Rockerboys are street poets and rebels, taking to the alleys and gutter ways with a strong message to spread. More often than not, going against the oppressive regimes put in place by governments. But as a Rockerboy, challenging authority is what you were born to do.
Johnny Silverhand (1988)
So, while Cyberpunk 2077’s Silverhand is based off the 2020 game, their look couldn’t be more different. One is stuck with an 80’s prediction of the future, while Keanu is the ideal dystopian vagabond.
Cyberpunk 2020 publisher R. Talsorian Games have made sure to voice their excitement of Keanu playing Silverhand saying: “There aren’t words to describe seeing someone of Mr. Reeves talent and legacy picking up a character first introduced over 30 years ago and bringing him to life”.
All or foe?
We know that Johnny Silverhand will be an unplayable character in Cyberpunk 2077, but whether he is an ally or foe remains to be seen. It’s an intriguing character, one that could sway either way due to the nature of the Rockerboy class developed back in the 80’s.
Either way, expect a rebel of the highest degree.
Marvel wants Keanu Reeves too
It’s true. Keanu has always been a crowd favourite, but 2019 really got things rolling for him again. He’s an internet sensation and has caught the attention of the most dominating superhero franchise to ever exist – Marvel.
"We talk to him for almost every film we make," Feige (Marvel producer) said. "I don't know when, if, or ever he'll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it."
But if he was to join the Marvel cast, who would he play? Hero or villain?
With Marvel’s Phase 4 on the horizon, who better than the Shang-Chi, the Asian Kung Fu Master from the Marvel comics. Keanu is part Chinese after all, with a talent for kicking ass on screen.
